Gardening
Seed planter donated by Mark Paterson |
Josh filling up garden bed. |
Hnnah holding her plant trays. |
Still time to grow! |
Gardening
Room 6 have designed and built garden beds out of recycled half round fence posts.
Thank you to Mr Smith, Mr Watchorn and Mr Dalton for you help and support.
They turned out great with lots of learning in the preparation to get them to this stage.
We have made our own compost which has been working it's magic for the past term. We are nearly ready to put our plants out into the garden.
Have found a simple idea to use fizzy drink bottles as mini glass houses for our seedlings as the weather in Mamaku can be very cold especially if you are not use to it.

Living Processes
Movement, Reproduction, Sensitivity, Growth, Respiration, Excretion and Nutrition.
Movement
Where something moves.
Reproduction
All organisms need to reproduce to keep the species going so they do not all die out.
Sensitivity
Organisms need to be aware of their surroundings. This helps them keep out of danger and away from harm, but it also helps us to find food and shelter. We have our five senses which enable us to sense our surroundings. Plants can sense where light is coming from so they can grow towards the light. Microbes can sense where food is in a similar way to the way we can smell food.
Growth
All living things grow and get bigger. From a tiny seed a tree can grow. Even microbes grow.
Respiration
All organisms need energy so they can do things like move and grow. Respiration releases energy from food so we can do things. All organisms need to respire to get energy.
Excretion
All organisms make waste. When we respire we make carbon dioxide gas. This is got rid of when we breathe. When we go to the toilet to urinate we get rid of waste which was in our blood. All living things must get rid of the waste they make. This is called excretion.
Nutrition
All living things need food. Animals must consume (eat) other living things to get food. Plants can make their own food by photosynthesis. They use simple chemicals and the energy in sunlight to make food like sugar. The living animal, Mrs Nerg, and the seven life processes!
There are seven life processes that tell us that animals are alive. To help us remember them we have found a friend to remind you - Mrs Nerg. Although her name sounds a bit strange, the letters in it stand for the life processes - movement, reproduction, sensitivity, nutrition, excretion, respiration and growth.
